D&D 5e Point Buy System
Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition lets players build ability scores with a 27-point budget instead of rolling dice. Each score costs points based on its value, and racial bonuses are added after purchase.
Point Buy Costs
Official Player's Handbook costs for ability scores 8 through 15:
- 8 = 0 points, 9 = 1, 10 = 2, 11 = 3, 12 = 4, 13 = 5, 14 = 7, 15 = 9
Ability modifier equals \(\lfloor(\text{score} - 10) / 2\rfloor\). A score of 15 gives +2; 8 gives -1.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many points do I get in 5e point buy?
The standard rules give 27 points to spend across all six ability scores. You must assign a score to each ability.
What is the highest score I can buy?
You can purchase up to 15 before racial bonuses. With a +2 racial bonus, a character can start with 17 in one ability.
Can I leave all scores at 8?
No. You must spend all 27 points. Three 15s use the full budget (9 points each), leaving the other three at 8.
When are racial bonuses applied?
Racial bonuses are added after point buy. They do not cost points and are not limited by the 8–15 purchase range.
How is the ability modifier calculated?
Subtract 10 from the total score (base plus racial bonus) and divide by 2, rounding down. A total of 14 gives modifier +2.
