How to Calculate Plant Spacing

The number of plants you can fit in an area depends on the grid pattern you choose. For a square grid, plants are placed at the corners of squares of equal side length. The formula is:

where $N$ is the total number of plants, $L$ is the area length, $W$ is the area width, $B$ is the border width, and $S$ is the plant spacing.

For a rectangular grid (rows), you can have different spacing between rows ($R$) and between plants within a row ($S$):

$$N = \left(\left\lfloor\frac{L - 2B}{S}\right\rfloor + 1\right) \times \left(\left\lfloor\frac{W - 2B}{R}\right\rfloor + 1\right)$$

A triangular grid is the most space-efficient arrangement. Plants are placed at the vertices of equilateral triangles, which allows up to 15% more plants in the same area compared to a square grid. The triangular arrangement alternates plants in adjacent rows, creating a staggered pattern.

The plant density (plants per unit area) can be calculated as:
