Piston Force Calculator
Calculate piston force from cylinder pressure and piston area with unit conversion and step-by-step mechanical formulas.
What Is Piston Force?
A piston converts fluid or gas pressure inside a cylinder into linear mechanical force. Engineers use this relationship to size hydraulic cylinders, pneumatic actuators, and engine components.
Piston Force Formula
Force on the piston head is:
$$F = P \times A = \frac{P \times \pi \times d^2}{4}$$where:
- \(F\) — piston force (N)
- \(P\) — cylinder pressure (Pa)
- \(A\) — bore area (m²)
- \(d\) — piston bore diameter (m)
A 25 mm bore at 100 kPa produces about 49 N of force. Double the diameter and force quadruples because area scales with diameter squared.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate bore area from diameter?
Use \(A = \pi d^2 / 4\). For 25 mm diameter the area is about 491 mm².
Can I find pressure from force and diameter?
Yes. Rearrange to \(P = 4F / (\pi d^2)\). This is useful when you know the load a cylinder must hold.
Does rod diameter affect force?
On the rod side of a double-acting cylinder, effective area is reduced by the rod cross section. This tool uses full bore area for the piston head.
What units should I use?
Force in newtons needs pressure in pascals and diameter in meters. The calculator converts kPa, bar, PSI, and common length units for you.
Where are piston force calculations used?
Hydraulic presses, aircraft landing gear, engine design, and pneumatic automation all rely on pressure times area to estimate thrust or load capacity.
