What Is Normal Force?
Normal force is the perpendicular contact force a surface exerts on an object. On a flat horizontal floor, it balances the object's weight. On an inclined plane, only part of the weight presses into the surface, so the normal force is smaller than the full weight.

On a horizontal surface with no vertical acceleration:
$$N = mg$$On a frictionless incline at angle \(\theta\) from horizontal:
$$N = mg\cos(\theta)$$The component \(mg\sin(\theta)\) acts parallel to the slope and can cause sliding. Friction uses the normal force: \(f = \mu N\).

Is normal force always equal to weight?
No. On a flat surface it equals weight, but on an incline it is \(mg\cos(\theta)\), which is less than the full weight when the angle is greater than zero.
What happens at 90 degrees on an incline?
At a vertical wall (\(\theta = 90°\)), \(\cos(90°) = 0\), so the normal force from gravity alone is zero unless another force pushes the object into the wall.
Can normal force exceed weight?
Yes. In an elevator accelerating upward, the floor pushes harder than \(mg\). This calculator assumes only gravitational loading on the surface.
What units does normal force use?

How is normal force related to friction?
