What is the Midrange?

In statistics, the midrange (or mid-range) of a dataset is the arithmetic mean of the maximum and minimum values in the dataset. It is a measure of central tendency that represents the exact midpoint between the two extreme values. Because it only depends on the minimum and maximum values, it is highly sensitive to outliers but extremely easy to compute and understand.

Midrange Formula

To calculate the midrange of a set of data, you identify the smallest value ($x_{min}$) and the largest value ($x_{max}$) in the set, add them together, and divide by 2. The formula is written as:

$$Midrange = \frac{x_{min} + x_{max}}{2}$$

Example Calculation

Consider the dataset: $4, 15, 2, 8, 31, 12, 19$.

  1. First, sort the numbers in ascending order: $2, 4, 8, 12, 15, 19, 31$.
  2. Identify the minimum value ($x_{min}$): $2$.
  3. Identify the maximum value ($x_{max}$): $31$.
  4. Apply the midrange formula: $\frac{2 + 31}{2} = \frac{33}{2} = 16.5$.

The midrange of this dataset is $16.5$.

Midrange vs. Mean, Median, and Mode

Measure Definition Sensitivity to Outliers
Midrange The average of the absolute maximum and minimum values. Extremely High
Mean (Average) The sum of all values divided by the total count. High
Median The middle value when the dataset is sorted. Low (Robust)
Mode The value that appears most frequently in the dataset. Low (Robust)

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between midrange and range?

The midrange is the average of the minimum and maximum values: (Min + Max) / 2. The range is the difference between the maximum and minimum values: Max - Min. While range measures the spread of the data, midrange identifies a central midpoint.

Is the midrange affected by outliers?

Yes, the midrange is extremely sensitive to outliers because it only uses the two extreme values (Min and Max) of a dataset. A single exceptionally large or small number will completely change the midrange result, even if the rest of the dataset remains identical.

Can midrange be negative?

Yes, if the sum of the minimum and maximum values is negative, the midrange will be negative. For example, if the minimum is -10 and the maximum is -2, the midrange is (-10 + -2) / 2 = -6.

When is midrange used in real life?

Midrange is commonly used in weather reporting to state the average daily temperature: (Daily Min Temp + Daily Max Temp) / 2. It is also used in quick estimations when full dataset details are not available, but the absolute limits are known.
