Budget Tracker
Track income and expenses by category with a live balance, monthly filters, a category breakdown, and instant transaction history, all saved privately in your browser.
What the Budget Tracker Does
The Budget Tracker is a private, browser based tool for logging income and expenses and watching your balance in real time. Add a transaction with a description, amount, type, category, and date, and the summary cards update instantly with total income, total expenses, and the remaining balance. A category breakdown shows where the money went, and a month filter lets you review any period in seconds.
Every entry is saved to your browser's local storage, so your data survives page refreshes and stays on your device. Nothing is uploaded, no account is needed, and the tracker works offline once the page has loaded.
How to Use the Budget Tracker
- Enter a description and amount for the transaction, such as "Grocery shopping" and 64.20.
- Choose whether it is an expense or income. The category selector switches to Income automatically for income entries.
- Pick a category and confirm the date, then press Add transaction.
- Watch the Summary cards and Category breakdown update immediately on the right.
- Use Filter by month to review a single month, or leave it on All months for the full picture.
Reading the Summary Cards
- Income: the total of every income entry in the selected period.
- Expenses: the total of every expense entry in the selected period.
- Balance: income minus expenses. A negative balance is shown in red so overspending is impossible to miss.
Because the summary respects the month filter, you can compare months at a glance: switch between them and the income, expense, and balance figures recalculate instantly.
Expense Categories and the Breakdown
Each expense is assigned to a category: Food, Transport, Housing, Entertainment, Shopping, Health, Education, or Other. The category breakdown aggregates expenses for the selected period and shows each category's share of total spending as an amount and a percentage, with a proportional bar for quick visual comparison. If housing eats 45 percent of your spending, the bar makes that obvious immediately.
Income entries are tracked under a single Income category so the breakdown always reflects spending only. If you want a deeper analysis of a monthly plan, the Budget Calculator and the 50-30-20 Rule Budget Calculator pair well with this tracker.
Your Data Stays in Your Browser
Financial entries are sensitive, so the tracker never sends them anywhere. All processing happens in your browser and everything is stored in local storage under a single key. Clearing your browser's site data removes the entries, and because storage is local, the data does not sync between devices or browsers. Use Clear all inside the Transactions panel to wipe everything at once, or delete individual entries with the trash button on each row.
Tips for Building a Tracking Habit
- Log transactions the same day they happen, while the amount is fresh in your memory.
- Write descriptions you will understand in a month, for example "Train pass" instead of "Transport".
- Check the month filter at the end of each month and compare the balance to the previous one.
- Watch the category breakdown to spot the category that deserves a budget cap.
- Keep income entries consistent so monthly comparisons stay meaningful.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is my financial data private?
Yes. The Budget Tracker runs entirely in your browser. Transactions are never sent to a server, and they are stored only in your browser's local storage on this device.
Does my data sync across devices?
No. Local storage belongs to a single browser on a single device, so entries added on your laptop will not appear on your phone. This is the trade off for keeping the data completely private with no account.
What happens if I clear my browser data?
Entries stored in local storage are deleted when you clear site data for this site, and they cannot be recovered. Delete individual rows with the trash button or use Clear all if you want to remove everything from inside the tool.
Can I track income as well as expenses?
Yes. Choose Income as the type when adding a transaction. Income is totaled separately in the summary and is excluded from the expense category breakdown.
How does the month filter work?
The filter reads the months that actually have transactions and lists them newest first. Selecting a month recalculates the summary, the category breakdown, and the transaction list for that month only. All months shows everything combined.
Can I edit a transaction after adding it?
The tracker supports adding and deleting entries. To change an entry, delete it with the trash button and add the corrected transaction. This keeps the running totals simple and predictable.
Does it work offline?
Yes. Once the page has loaded, the tracker needs no network connection. All calculations run locally and local storage works offline, which makes it handy for logging expenses while traveling.
Which currency does the tracker use?
Amounts are displayed in US dollars using standard formatting. You can still enter values in any currency, but the dollar sign and formatting will remain consistent across the summary and transaction list.
