What Is Left Ventricular Mass Index?
Left ventricular mass index (LVMI) adjusts left ventricular mass for body size using body surface area (BSA). Echocardiography measures chamber dimensions and wall thickness, which feed into the Devereux formula to estimate LV mass in grams. LVMI helps assess cardiac hypertrophy and cardiovascular risk. How LV Mass and LVMI Are Calculated
LV mass uses the Devereux equation: 0.8 × [1.04 × ((LVEDD + IVSd + PWd)³ − LVEDD³)] + 0.6, with LVEDD, IVSd, and PWd in centimeters. LVMI equals LV mass divided by BSA in g/m². Relative wall thickness (RWT) is (2 × PWd) / LVEDD. When BSA is unknown, height and weight compute Haycock BSA automatically.
Interpreting LVMI and Wall Geometry
Normal LVMI is 43–95 g/m² for women and 49–115 g/m² for men. Values above these ranges indicate mild, moderate, or severe enlargement by sex. Combined with RWT, patterns are classified: concentric hypertrophy (elevated LVMI and RWT above 0.42), eccentric hypertrophy (elevated LVMI with RWT 0.42 or below), concentric remodeling (normal LVMI with RWT above 0.42), or normal geometry.
