LC Resonant Circuits

An LC tank circuit stores energy oscillating between the inductor's magnetic field and the capacitor's electric field. Its resonant frequency is fundamental to radio tuners, oscillators, and bandpass filters.

Formula

$$f = \frac{1}{2\pi\sqrt{LC}}$$

Rearranging gives \(L = 1 / ((2\pi f)^2 C)\) and \(C = 1 / ((2\pi f)^2 L)\). Use inductance in henries and capacitance in farads for SI calculations.

Practical Notes

This calculator accepts inductance in microhenries (µH) and capacitance in nanofarads (nF), which are common in RF and audio circuit design. Parasitic inductance and capacitance can shift the real resonant frequency.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an LC filter?

An LC filter uses inductors and capacitors to pass or block specific frequency ranges, exploiting resonance and impedance characteristics.

How do I design for a target frequency?

Fix one component value (L or C) and solve for the other using the resonant frequency formula, or use this calculator's solve modes.

Do real components match ideal values?

Component tolerances, stray capacitance, and wire inductance cause small deviations. Use this as a design starting point.
