Lighting Calculator
Calculate required lumens and number of light bulbs for any room based on area, illumination level, and bulb type.
How Much Light Does a Room Need?
Good lighting depends on room type, activity, and area size. Our Lighting Calculator estimates required lumens from room dimensions and recommended illumination levels, then tells you how many bulbs you need.
The Lighting Formula
Required lumens equal illumination level times area:
$$Lumens = Lux \times Area$$
Lux measures light falling on a surface. A kitchen counter for detailed tasks needs more lux than a bedroom used for relaxing. Once you know total lumens, divide by each bulb's lumen output and round up.
$$Bulbs\ Needed = \lceil \frac{Lumens}{Bulb\ Lumens} \rceil$$
Room Illumination Guidelines
- Bedroom ambient: around 54 lux for soft evening light
- Living room: around 108 lux for general use
- Kitchen task areas: around 538 lux for food prep
- Desk or sewing: around 538 lux for detailed work
Pair this tool with our Electricity Cost Calculator to estimate how much your lighting setup will cost to run.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between lux and lumens?
Lumens measure total light output from a source. Lux measures light received per square meter on a surface. More lumens spread over a larger area means lower lux.
How many lumens do I need for a 20 m² room?
Multiply the room area by the recommended lux level. For 108 lux in a 20 m² living room, you need about 2,160 lumens total.
Should I use wattage or lumens when buying bulbs?
Use lumens. Wattage only tells you power draw. Lumens tell you actual brightness, which is what matters for room lighting.
Can I enter dimensions in feet?
Yes. Select feet as the unit and enter length and width. The calculator converts area to square meters internally for the lux formula.
