Keystrokes per Hour (KPH) is a standard metric used by employers, data entry companies, and typing professionals to measure data entry speed and overall typing efficiency. Unlike Words per Minute (WPM), which measures speed based on whole words, KPH measures every individual key press, including letters, numbers, punctuation marks, and spaces.

KPH and typing Metrics Conversion Formulas

To convert between typing metrics, standard typing conventions define a single "word" as exactly 5 keystrokes. Using this baseline, the conversions are computed as:

• Keystrokes per Minute (KPM): KPM = Keystrokes / Time (minutes)
• Keystrokes per Hour (KPH): KPH = KPM * 60
• Words per Minute (WPM): WPM = KPM / 5 or WPM = KPH / 300

Why KPH Matters in Data Entry

In many administrative, medical transcription, and bookkeeping roles, speed is measured in KPH. A KPH rate of 8,000 to 10,000 is generally considered standard for professional data entry operators, while advanced typists can reach speeds over 15,000 KPH. Measuring keystrokes provides a more precise reflection of raw input speed compared to word-based metrics.
