Heart Rate From Pulse Count

This Heart Rate Calculator converts a manual pulse count over a timed interval into beats per minute (BPM). Count your pulse for 15, 30, or 60 seconds, then enter the count to get your heart rate. For post-exercise recovery, see our Heart Rate Recovery Calculator.

The Heart Rate Formula

BPM = Pulse Count × (60 / Measurement Seconds). For example, 18 beats in 15 seconds equals 18 × 4 = 72 BPM.

How to Measure Your Pulse

Place two fingers on your wrist below the thumb base. Count each heartbeat during the selected interval. A 15-second count is quick; a 60-second count is the most accurate for resting heart rate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a normal resting heart rate?

For most adults, a healthy resting heart rate ranges from 60 to 100 beats per minute. Athletes may have resting rates below 60 BPM.

Why multiply by 60 divided by seconds?

This scales your pulse count to a full minute. Counting for 15 seconds multiplies by 4; counting for 30 seconds multiplies by 2.

Which interval is most accurate?

A 60-second count is most accurate for resting heart rate. A 15-second count is convenient during or immediately after exercise.

Should I measure resting or active heart rate?

Resting heart rate is measured after sitting quietly for several minutes. Active heart rate is measured during or immediately after physical activity.
