What is Elapsed Time?

Elapsed time is the amount of time that passes between two events. For example, if you start a task at 9:00 AM and finish at 5:00 PM, the elapsed time is 8 hours. Our elapsed time calculator helps you compute this in three ways: find the duration between two times, find the end time when you know the start time and duration, or find the start time when you know the end time and duration.

How to Use the Elapsed Time Calculator

Select your calculation mode from the dropdown:

  • Find Duration: Enter the start and end times to calculate how much time passed between them.
  • Find End Time: Enter a start time and a duration to find out when the event ends.
  • Find Start Time: Enter an end time and a duration to determine when the event started.

All times use 24-hour format (0-23 for hours, 0-59 for minutes). The calculator automatically handles overnight durations — for example, 23:30 to 01:15 correctly returns 1 hour 45 minutes.

Elapsed Time Formula

The basic formula for elapsed time is:

Elapsed Time = End Time - Start Time

When the end time is earlier than the start time (overnight), add 24 hours to the end time before subtracting:

Elapsed Time = (End Time + 24:00) - Start Time

Common Uses for Elapsed Time

  • Work hours tracking: Calculate how many hours you worked between clock-in and clock-out.
  • Travel planning: Determine journey duration between departure and arrival times.
  • Meeting scheduling: Find meeting end time given a start time and meeting length.
  • Event planning: Calculate when an event starts based on its end time and expected duration.
  • Study sessions: Track how long you studied or plan your study schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is elapsed time in simple words?

Elapsed time is the duration between two events. If you start reading at 2:00 PM and finish at 3:30 PM, the elapsed time is 1 hour and 30 minutes.

How do you calculate elapsed time between two times?

Convert both times to 24-hour format, convert them to total minutes, subtract the start time from the end time, and convert the result back to hours and minutes. If the result is negative, add 24 hours (1440 minutes) to account for overnight durations.

Can this calculator handle overnight or next-day durations?

Yes. The calculator automatically detects when the end time is earlier than the start time (e.g., 23:30 to 01:15) and adds 24 hours to the end time to give you the correct overnight duration.

What is the difference between elapsed time and duration?

Elapsed time and duration mean the same thing — both refer to the amount of time between two events. Elapsed time is often used in everyday language while duration is more common in technical contexts.

How do I find the end time if I know the start time and duration?

Add the duration to the start time. For example, if you start a 2-hour meeting at 14:30, the end time is 16:30 Simply select "Find End Time" mode, enter the start time and duration, and the calculator does the rest.

What is 24-hour format and how do I use it?

24-hour format runs from 00:00 (midnight) to 23:59 (one minute before midnight). 8:00 AM is 08:00, 1:00 PM is 13:00, and 11:00 PM is 23:00. This format avoids the AM/PM confusion and makes time calculations simpler.

Does this tool support seconds?

This calculator works with hours and minutes for simplicity. If you need precision to the second, try our time difference calculator which supports seconds-level accuracy.
