What Is the COVID Mortality Risk Calculator?

This educational tool estimates relative COVID-19 case fatality risk from age, sex, and common comorbidities using early China CDC cohort data from February 2020. Data Sources and Limits

Reported case fatality varied by age from about 0.2% in younger adults to 14.8% in people 80 and older. Males had higher reported fatality (2.8%) than females (1.7%). Comorbidity subgroups such as cardiovascular disease showed elevated rates around 10.5%. Vaccination, treatments, and variants changed real-world risk after this dataset was published.

How Results Are Combined

The calculator starts with an age-specific baseline, adjusts for sex, then incorporates the highest selected comorbidity rate when conditions are present. Results are relative estimates for learning, not individualized medical predictions.

Why does age dominate the estimate?

Age was the strongest predictor in early datasets. Immune function and reserve decline with age, raising complication and mortality rates.

Which comorbidities are included?

Cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, hypertension, and malignant disease. Each uses published subgroup fatality rates from the source paper.

Does female sex lower estimated risk?

Early data showed lower reported fatality among females. The tool applies that sex-specific adjustment to the age baseline.
