Chinese Zodiac Calculator from Birth Date
The twelve Chinese zodiac animals (生肖) follow a lunar-year cycle that begins on Chinese New Year, not January 1 on the Gregorian calendar. That means January and early February birthdays often belong to the previous zodiac animal. This calculator uses published Chinese New Year boundary dates between 1900 and 2040 and reports the animal together with heavenly stem, earthly branch, yin/yang, and the associated five-elements label used in the traditional sixty-year stem-branch cycle.
What you get
- Zodiac animal name in English (Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig).
- Five-elements reading (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) tied to the heavenly stem.
- Yin or Yang polarity and the Chinese characters for stem and branch for quick reference.
Limits and accuracy
Results are for cultural and educational use. The supported Gregorian date range matches the embedded lunar new-year table in the calculation library. Astrology, compatibility, or fortune interpretations are outside the scope of this tool.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my animal different from a year-only lookup?
Many websites map only the Gregorian year. If you were born before Chinese New Year that year, you still belong to the previous lunar zodiac year.
Does this include the hour pillar (时辰八字)?
No. Only the date-based zodiac year cycle is shown. Full BaZi charts need hour-level lunar calculations.
Can I use dates before 1900?
Not in this version—the boundary table ends at 1900. Extend range only with a verified lunar calendar source.
Is this the same as my Western zodiac sign?
No. Western tropical zodiac uses solar month/day ranges unrelated to the Chinese lunar calendar.
