What is the Camera Recorder?
The Camera Recorder is a free online tool that lets you record video from your webcam, take photos, and download your captures directly in your browser. No software installation or account is required. Everything runs entirely on your device using standard browser APIs.
You can select from available cameras and microphones, capture screenshots as PNG images, record video with pause and resume support, and download or delete individual media items from the gallery. All processing is done client-side so your recordings never leave your computer.
For other media tools, try our Screen Recorder for recording your desktop or the Camera Tool for quick photo capture.

Browser Compatibility and Privacy
The Camera Recorder uses the MediaDevices API and MediaRecorder API, which are supported in all modern browsers including Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari. Video recordings are saved in WebM format using the VP9 codec when available, with VP8 as a fallback.
Since all media processing happens client-side, your video and photo data never leave your browser. No data is uploaded to any server. This makes the Camera Recorder suitable for capturing sensitive content where privacy is a concern.
Tips for Best Results
- Ensure you have adequate lighting for better photo and video quality.
- Use an external microphone for improved audio quality in recordings.
- Close other applications that may be using your camera to avoid conflicts.
- For longer recordings, make sure your device has sufficient storage space.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my camera not showing up?
Make sure you have granted camera and microphone permissions when prompted by your browser. If permissions were previously denied, you may need to reset them in your browser settings (usually the lock icon in the address bar). Also check that no other application is currently using your camera.
What video format does the recorder use?
The Camera Recorder saves video in WebM format using the VP9 codec with Opus audio when supported by your browser. This provides excellent compression and quality. WebM is playable in most modern browsers and media players including VLC, Windows Media Player (with codecs), and MPV.
Can I record my screen with this tool?
No, this tool is designed specifically for recording from your webcam. If you need to record your screen, try our Screen Recorder tool which supports screen recording with optional webcam overlay.
Is there a time limit for recordings?
There is no software-imposed time limit on recordings. However, longer recordings will consume more memory in your browser and may affect performance. For lengthy recording sessions, consider splitting your recording into shorter segments.
Why is my video recording not showing audio?
Make sure you have selected a microphone in the dropdown menu and that your microphone is properly connected. Some browsers may require additional permissions for audio capture. Also verify that your microphone is not muted in your system settings.
How do I download my captured media?
Each captured photo or video in the gallery has download (arrow) and delete (trash) buttons. Click the download button to save the file to your device. Photos are downloaded as PNG images, and videos are downloaded as WebM files. You can also right-click on images in the gallery to save them directly.
