What Is the Child-Pugh Score?
The Child-Pugh score classifies severity of liver cirrhosis using five clinical and laboratory measures: bilirubin, albumin, INR, ascites, and hepatic encephalopathy. It assigns Class A, B, or C with associated survival estimates. For transplant staging, clinicians often use MELD, but Child-Pugh remains widely used for prognosis and surgical risk. Score Interpretation
Class A (5 to 6 points) indicates well-compensated disease with the best prognosis. Class B (7 to 9) shows significant compromise. Class C (10 to 15) reflects decompensation with higher mortality. Elective surgery is generally acceptable in Class A, requires optimization in Class B, and is contraindicated in Class C.
West Haven Encephalopathy Grades
Grade I includes mild confusion or sleep rhythm changes. Grade II adds personality change and disorientation. Grade III is marked disorientation with somnolence. Grade IV is coma. Child-Pugh combines Grade I-II as one category and Grade III-IV as another.
