What Is a Child Height Percentile?

A child height percentile shows how a child's length or height compares to a reference population of the same age and sex. A 50th percentile means half of peers are shorter and half are taller. How WHO Height Percentiles Work

WHO growth standards use z-scores from reference medians and spreads by age in months. The percentile is the cumulative normal distribution of that z-score. Pediatricians track whether a child follows a similar percentile canal over time rather than focusing on a single reading.

When to Consult a Pediatrician

Percentiles between about the 3rd and 97th can be normal when growth follows a consistent pattern. The 50th percentile is the population median, not a target height.

Should I use length or standing height?

For infants and toddlers, recumbent length is standard. After about age 2, standing height is often used clinically. Enter the measurement you have in centimeters.

How is the z-score calculated?

Z-score equals (measured height minus WHO median) divided by the reference standard deviation at that age and sex.
