How the Body Type Calculator Works

Our Body Type Calculator helps you identify your body shape based on four key measurements: bust, waist, high hip, and hip. The classification uses an algorithm derived from research published in the International Journal of Clothing Science and Technology, which identifies seven distinct body shapes. While primarily designed for fashion and clothing fit, the calculator also provides your waist-hip ratio (WHR), which is a valuable indicator of health risk related to fat distribution.

Understanding the Seven Body Shapes

The calculator categorizes measurements into seven body shapes. The hourglass shape features nearly equal bust and hip measurements with a significantly narrower waist. Bottom hourglass has wider hips than bust with a defined waist, while top hourglass has a wider bust than hips. The spoon shape features hips significantly wider than the bust with a prominent high hip. Triangle (or pear shape) has hips wider than the bust with less waist definition. Inverted triangle (or apple shape) has a broader bust and shoulders than hips. Rectangle (or banana shape) has bust, waist, and hips that are fairly aligned with minimal waist definition.

How to Take Accurate Measurements

For accurate results, stand straight with your arms at your sides. Use a flexible measuring tape that is snug against your body but not compressing the skin. Measure your bust at the fullest part while wearing a properly fitted bra. Measure your waist at the narrowest point, just above the belly button. The high hip measurement should be taken about 7 inches (18 cm) below your natural waist, around the upper swell of the hip. Measure your hip at the widest part of the buttocks.

Waist-Hip Ratio and Health

Your waist-hip ratio (WHR) is calculated by dividing your waist measurement by your hip measurement. Research has shown that people with more weight around their waist (apple-shaped) face higher health risks than those with more weight around their hips (pear-shaped). According to the WHO, women with WHR above 0.85 and men with WHR above 0.90 are considered at increased health risk. WHR has been found to be a better predictor of cardiovascular disease and mortality than BMI alone, particularly in older adults.
