Australian Income Tax System Overview
The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) levies progressive individual income tax rates on resident and non-resident workers. Taxable income is calculated by subtracting allowable tax deductions from gross earnings, after which tax brackets and the Medicare levy are applied.
Australian Tax Brackets (2024–2025 Stage 3 Cuts)
Starting July 1, 2024, Australia implemented updated Stage 3 tax cuts designed to lower income tax rates across middle and higher income tiers. For Australian residents:
- $0 – $18,200: 0% (Tax-free threshold)
- $18,201 – $45,000: 16% of amount over $18,200
- $45,001 – $135,000: $4,288 plus 30% of amount over $45,000
- $135,001 – $190,000: $31,288 plus 37% of amount over $135,000
- $190,001+: $51,638 plus 45% of amount over $190,000
Medicare Levy and Superannuation
In addition to income tax, Australian residents pay a 2% Medicare levy to help fund public healthcare. Employers are also required to pay the Superannuation Guarantee (11.5% for the 2024–2025 financial year) on top of ordinary time earnings.
