How the Formula Works
The core Naismith formula is: Time = Distance ÷ 5 km/h + Elevation Gain ÷ 600 m/h. For example, a 10 km hike with 800 m of elevation gain would take 10 ÷ 5 + 800 ÷ 600 = 2 + 1.33 = 3.33 hours, or about 3 hours and 20 minutes.
