What Is a 0-60 Calculator?

The 0-60 time measures how many seconds it takes a vehicle to accelerate from a standstill to 60 miles per hour. It is one of the most widely used benchmarks for car performance in the US and UK. This calculator estimates 0-60 time from engine power, vehicle weight, drivetrain, tires, gearbox, and road conditions.

How the Estimate Works

The calculator starts with a physics-based theoretical time from power and weight, then applies real-world penalties for grip limits, vehicle type, motor type, tire compound, road conditions, and gearbox shift delays.

$$X = \frac{0.5 \times m \times (26.8224)^2}{P \times 745.7}$$

$$\text{Time} = \max(1.88 \times X,\; b + c + d) \times e \times f \times g + h$$

Where:

  • m — total vehicle mass in kg (empty weight + payload, converted from lb)
  • P — engine power in horsepower
  • b — drive grip floor (AWD 0.18 s, RWD 0.12 s, FWD 0.08 s)
  • c — tire grip adjustment (performance −0.15 s, normal 0)
  • d — condition adjustment (dry 0, damp +0.25 s, wet +0.65 s)
  • e — vehicle multiplier (sports 0.92, sedan 1.0, hatchback 0.96, SUV 1.12)
  • f — motor multiplier (electric 0.82, ICE 1.0)
  • g — condition multiplier (dry 1.0, damp 1.08, wet 1.18)
  • h — gearbox penalty (direct 0, dual-clutch 0.15, manual 0.35, auto 0.45 s)

Example

A 260 hp RWD sedan weighing 3,500 lb empty with 400 lb payload, automatic gearbox, normal tires, and dry conditions:

$$\text{0-60} \approx 6.6 \text{ seconds}$$

The calculator also estimates 0-100 km/h by multiplying the 0-60 result by approximately 1.05.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good 0-60 time?

Under 6 seconds is considered quick for a production car. Family sedans typically range from 6–8 seconds. Sports cars and performance EVs often achieve 3–5 seconds or less.

Why does drivetrain affect acceleration?

AWD vehicles can put more power to the ground without wheelspin, lowering the grip-limited floor time. FWD cars tend to struggle with traction under hard acceleration, raising the minimum achievable time.

How do road conditions change 0-60 time?

Wet roads reduce tire grip, increasing both the grip floor and the condition multiplier. A car that does 0-60 in 6.6 seconds on dry pavement might need 8+ seconds in the wet.

Why are electric cars faster off the line?

Electric motors deliver peak torque instantly with no gear shifts. The calculator applies a 0.82 motor multiplier and allows direct-drive gearboxes with zero shift penalty, reflecting their strong launch performance.

Does passenger and cargo weight matter?

Yes. Every pound of payload increases total mass, which raises the theoretical acceleration time. A half tank of fuel plus a passenger can add 300–500 lb and noticeably slow acceleration.

How accurate is this estimate?

This is a simplified model for comparison and planning. Real-world 0-60 times depend on launch technique, altitude, temperature, tire temperature, and specific vehicle tuning. Use manufacturer or independent test data for exact figures.
