What a Works Cited Generator Does

A works cited generator builds the source list that goes at the end of an MLA paper. Add each book, website, journal article, or video, and the page shows them in alphabetical order with a hanging indent. The same form can switch the heading to References for APA 7 or Bibliography for Chicago author-date. A filled example is loaded when you open the page, and you can clear it to a blank list.

Formatting runs in your browser. Source details are not uploaded.

How to Build a Works Cited Page

  1. Keep MLA selected for a works cited page, or switch to APA or Chicago if the assignment asks for another list.
  2. Choose the source type and fill authors, year, title, and the publisher, site, journal, or platform.
  3. Add the source. The title is required. Authors can be blank when a source has no named author.
  4. Repeat for every source. The preview sorts by the first author’s last name, then by title.
  5. Copy the plain text or print the page. If your editor drops the indent, set a 0.5 inch hanging indent on the list.

Hanging Indent

MLA, APA, and Chicago lists use a hanging indent: the first line of each entry starts at the left margin, and the following lines move in by half an inch. Leave the hanging indent option on to see that layout in the preview and on the printed page. The plain-text box is for pasting; apply the indent in your document if the paste comes out as a single block.

One Citation or a Full List

This page is the multi-source list. For one source plus the matching in-text citation, use the Citation Generator. The Bibliography Formatter uses the same entry rules when you want another pass at a long list. Check the paper’s length with the Character & Word Counter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a works cited page the same as a bibliography?

Not always. MLA uses the heading Works Cited for sources you actually cite. APA uses References. Chicago author-date uses Bibliography. This generator changes the heading when you change the style.

How should I enter more than one author?

Type each person as Last, First and separate people with semicolons, for example Nguyen, Linh; Patel, Arjun. The formatter applies each style’s punctuation from that list.

Why is the example already filled in?

The sample shows a journal article, a book, and a website so you can see hanging indents and alphabetical order before you replace them. Start blank removes those three sources.

Does this look up DOIs or websites for me?

No. You type the source details. That keeps the tool free of network calls and usable for unpublished or private readings.

Can I cite a source with no author?

Yes. Leave the author field empty and enter the title. The entry is sorted by title and formatted with the title in the author position.
