For both styles, enter the wall length, chair rail height, and trim dimensions including cap depth, top rail margin, bottom rail margin, and baseboard height. The panel height is automatically calculated as the chair rail height minus the baseboard, bottom rail margin, top rail margin, and cap depth.

Wainscoting Measurement Formulas

The panel height is calculated using the following formula:

$$panel\ height = H - b - m_{br} - m_t - c$$

Where $H$ is the chair rail height, $b$ is the baseboard depth, $m_br$ is the bottom rail margin, $m_t$ is the top rail margin, and $c$ is the cap molding depth.

For shadow box wainscoting with a fixed number of panels, the spacing between panels is:

$$spacing = \frac{L - n \times w_p}{n + 1}$$

Where $L$ is the wall length, $n$ is the number of panels, and $w_p$ is the panel width.

For fixed spacing, the panel width is:

$$w_p = \frac{L - (n + 1) \times s}{n}$$

Where $s$ is the spacing between panels.

For recessed panel wainscoting, the panel width is:

$$w_p = \frac{L - (n + 1) \times w_s}{n}$$

Where $w_s$ is the stile width.
