Unit Conversions
All distances are converted to meters and all times to seconds before division. For example, 100 kilometers in 2 hours gives \(100{,}000 \text{ m} / 7200 \text{ s} \approx 13.89\) m/s, or 50 km/h.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this average or instantaneous velocity?
This calculator computes average velocity over the full time interval. Instantaneous velocity at a specific moment requires calculus when speed changes during the trip.
What if time is zero?
Division by zero is undefined. Enter a positive time value. Zero time would imply infinite speed, which is not physical for ordinary motion.
How do I convert m/s to km/h?
Multiply meters per second by 3.6 to get kilometers per hour. The calculator performs this conversion automatically in the results panel.
Does direction matter?
Velocity is a vector with direction, but this tool reports speed (magnitude only) from scalar distance and time. Use a resultant velocity tool for vector components.
Can I use this for running or driving?
Yes. Enter race distance and finish time, or road distance and travel time, with the matching units. The result is average speed over that interval.
