Optimal TV Mounting Height

Mounting a TV too high causes neck strain. The standard recommendation places the center of the screen at seated eye level for comfortable viewing from your sofa or chair.

TV Mount Height Formula

$$\text{TV height} \approx \text{diagonal size} \times 0.49$$ $$\text{mount center height} = \text{seated eye height} - \frac{\text{TV height}}{2}$$

Example: a 55-inch TV has a vertical height of about 27 inches. With a 42-inch seated eye height, mount the center at roughly 28.5 inches from the floor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why multiply TV size by 0.49?

Most widescreen TVs use a 16:9 aspect ratio. The vertical height is roughly 49% of the diagonal screen size in inches.

What seated eye height should I use?

Measure from the floor to your eyes while sitting in your primary viewing seat. Typical sofa seating is 40–44 inches.

Does viewing distance change mount height?

The center-at-eye-level rule works for most living rooms. Distance mainly affects perceived screen size and viewing angle, which this tool reports for reference.

Should I mount above a fireplace?

Fireplace mantels often push TVs too high. If you must mount higher, tilt the bracket downward or choose a lower mantel height.

What about standing viewers?

This calculator optimizes for seated viewing. Bar-height seating or mixed-use rooms may need a compromise height.
