Text Truncator
Shorten text or each line by character or word count with a custom ellipsis suffix.
Truncate text to a fixed length
Social cards, meta descriptions, and data tables often need hard limits on characters or
words. Set a maximum, pick a custom suffix (ellipsis, ..., or
[more]), and apply the limit to the whole block or each line
separately. Truncation respects word boundaries when limiting by words.
Character vs. word limits
- Characters, matches Twitter/X-style caps and database column widths.
- Words, keeps whole tokens for teaser paragraphs and bullet previews.
For wrapping instead of cutting, see Break Line by Characters. For padding short lines to a width, use Text Align Pad.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the suffix always appended when truncating?
The suffix is added only when content exceeds the limit. Shorter text is returned unchanged.
How are multibyte emoji counted?
Limits use JavaScript string length (UTF-16 code units). Most emoji count as two units; plan limits accordingly for international copy.
Can I truncate only the first line?
Disable per-line mode and paste a single line, or split lines with another text tool first, then run per-line truncation on the block.
