Pad and align fixed-width text columns

Terminal exports, ASCII tables, and legacy mainframe dumps often need every row to span the same character width. This tool pads each line to your target width using a fill character you choose, with left (pad the end), right (pad the start), or center alignment.

When to use alignment padding

  1. Normalize ragged log lines before diffing or pasting into spreadsheets.
  2. Build monospaced columns without a full table editor.
  3. Center titles in plain-text README blocks.

For trimming whitespace instead of adding it, try the Text Trimmer. To wrap long prose, use Text Replacer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if a line is already wider than the target?

The line is left unchanged. Padding only applies when the line is shorter than the width you set.

Can I use a dot or zero as the pad character?

Yes. Only the first character of the pad field is used, so you can fill with ., 0, or any other single-byte character.

Does this run on the server?

No. All padding happens in your browser; your text is never uploaded.
