How to Calculate Grain Bin Capacity

The formulas used depend on the bin shape:

Round Bin (Cylindrical):

where $r$ is the radius and $h$ is the grain depth (effective height based on fill level).

Rectangular Bin:

$$Volume = l \times w \times h$$

where $l$ is the length, $w$ is the width, and $h$ is the grain depth.

Factors Affecting Grain Storage Capacity

Several factors can affect the actual usable capacity of a grain bin beyond the simple geometric calculation:

  • Fill Level: Most bins are not filled to 100% capacity. A typical fill level ranges from 80-95% to allow for headspace and ventilation.
  • Grain Type and Density: Different grains have different test weights (pounds per bushel). Corn weighs 56 lb/bu, while wheat weighs 60 lb/bu. This affects the actual weight of grain stored.
  • Bin Cone and Roof: Many bins have a conical roof or hopper bottom that adds storage space above the eave height. Our calculator focuses on the main cylindrical/rectangular body for simplicity.
  • Moisture Content: Grain moisture affects density. Higher moisture grain weighs less per bushel and may result in lower total weight capacity.
  • Compaction: Grain settles and compacts over time, which can slightly increase the amount of grain that fits in a bin.

In practice, most capacity calculations use only the eave height for conservative estimates.
