Speed of Sound Calculator
Calculate speed of sound in air from temperature, humidity, and gas properties with Mach number.
Speed of Sound in Air
The speed of sound in an ideal gas depends on temperature and the ratio of specific heats. For dry air near sea level:
$$v = \sqrt{\frac{\gamma R T}{M}}$$where \(\gamma \approx 1.4\), \(R = 8.314\ \text{J/(mol·K)}\), \(T\) is absolute temperature in kelvin, and \(M \approx 0.02896\ \text{kg/mol}\) is the molar mass of dry air. Humidity lowers the effective molar mass slightly, increasing the speed of sound.
At 20 °C, \(v \approx 343\) m/s. The Mach number is the ratio of an object's velocity to the local speed of sound: \(\text{Ma} = v_{\text{object}} / v_{\text{sound}}\).
Frequently Asked Questions
How does temperature affect sound speed?
Sound travels faster in warmer air because \(v \propto \sqrt{T}\). Each degree Celsius changes speed by roughly 0.6 m/s near room temperature.
Does humidity matter?
Yes, but the effect is small. Water vapor is lighter than dry air, so humid air has a slightly higher speed of sound.
What is Mach 1?
Mach 1 means the object moves at the local speed of sound. Subsonic flow is below Mach 1; supersonic is above it.
