How to Calculate the Cost of a Shower

Every time you take a shower, you consume two main resources: water and energy to heat that water. While we often think of water as the primary expense, heating energy is typically the larger portion of the total cost. Our Shower Cost Calculator helps you break down these expenses by calculating the exact cost of a single shower, as well as your weekly and yearly household averages.

The Math and Formulas Behind the Cost

Calculating shower cost requires combining water volume calculations with thermal energy physics. Let $V$ represent the total volume of water used, $d$ the shower duration, and $FR$ the flow rate of the showerhead.

$$V = d \times FR$$

The cost of the water is then calculated by multiplying the volume by your local water rate per unit.

1. Calculating Water Heating Energy (Imperial System)

To heat water, we must calculate the energy required to raise the temperature of the water from the cold inlet temperature ($T_{inlet}$) to the hot shower temperature ($T_{shower}$). In the Imperial system, we measure this energy in British Thermal Units (BTUs). One gallon of water weighs approximately 8.34 pounds, and 1 BTU is the energy required to heat 1 pound of water by 1°F. The formula is:

$$\text{Energy (BTUs)} = V \text{ (gallons)} \times 8.34 \times (T_{shower} - T_{inlet})$$

We then account for the efficiency of the water heater ($\eta$). For electric water heaters, we convert BTUs to kilowatt-hours (kWh) where $1 \text{ kWh} = 3,412.14 \text{ BTUs}$:

$$\text{Electricity (kWh)} = \frac{\text{Energy (BTUs)}}{3,412.14 \times \eta}$$

For gas water heaters, we convert BTUs to therms where $1 \text{ therm} = 100,000 \text{ BTUs}$:

$$\text{Gas (therms)} = \frac{\text{Energy (BTUs)}}{100,000 \times \eta}$$

2. Calculating Water Heating Energy (Metric System)

In the Metric system, we calculate the energy required using the specific heat capacity of water, which is approximately $4.184 \text{ kJ/kg°C}$ or $0.001163 \text{ kWh/kg°C}$. One liter of water weighs exactly 1 kilogram. The formula for heating energy is:

$$\text{Energy (kWh)} = \frac{V \text{ (liters)} \times (T_{shower} - T_{inlet}) \times 0.001163}{\eta}$$

Tips to Reduce Your Shower Costs

Since heating energy accounts for the majority of the cost, the most effective way to save money is to reduce the amount of hot water you use. Here are three simple ways to lower your utility bills:

  • Install a Low-Flow Showerhead: Older showerheads can have flow rates of 2.5 to 5 gallons per minute (GPM). Modern, EPA WaterSense certified showerheads restrict flow to 1.5 or 2.0 GPM without sacrificing water pressure, immediately cutting your costs by 20% to 50%.
  • Shorten Your Shower Time: Reducing your shower from 10 minutes to 8 minutes can save a typical household over $100 per year in utility costs.
  • Lower the Water Heater Temperature: Many water heaters are factory-set to 140°F (60°C). Lowering the setting to 120°F (49°C) reduces standby heat loss and lowers the energy required to heat the cold inlet water.
