The Mathematics of Candle Making

Scent load is always calculated relative to the weight of the wax, not the total weight of the finished candle. To fill a container of a given water weight capacity ($W$) with a specific wax density ($D$) and fragrance load ($L\%$), the formulas are:

Wax Weight = (Water Weight × Density) / (1 + (Fragrance Load / 100))

Fragrance Oil Weight = Wax Weight × (Fragrance Load / 100)

Understanding Wax Density

Wax is less dense than water, meaning 8 fl oz of wax weighs less than 8 fl oz of water (which weighs exactly 8 oz). If you do not adjust for wax density, you will end up with too much wax.

Why must candle ingredients be measured by weight instead of volume?

Liquid volume changes with temperature, and different fragrance oils have different densities. Measuring both wax and fragrance oil by weight (using a digital scale in ounces or grams) guarantees correct and consistent ratios regardless of temperature or scent choice.

What happens if I put too much fragrance oil in a candle?

Exceeding the recommended fragrance load of your wax (typically 10-12% maximum) can prevent the oil from binding with the wax. This causes "sweating" (oil pooling on top), poor scent throw, soot, or even can cause the candle to catch fire.

How do I calculate volume for custom container shapes?

You can easily find any container's capacity by placing it empty on a scale, taring (zeroing) the scale, and filling the container with water to the desired pour height. The water weight in grams is equivalent to the volume in milliliters.
