The Douglass Kite Size Formula
Kite size (m²) = (rider weight in kg × constant) / wind speed in knots. The constant is 2.2 for bow kites and 0.5 for trainer kites. A 75 kg rider in 18 knots needs about 9.2 m² bow kite. The comfortable range spans roughly 15% below and above the ideal size.
Board Size Guidelines
Board length and width depend primarily on rider weight. Heavier kiters need longer, wider boards for planing. Wind strength, riding style, and board shape also affect the best choice. Smaller kites in stronger wind are easier for beginners to control.
