What Is Incidence Rate?

Incidence rate measures how many new cases of a disease or event occur in a defined population over a specific time period. Unlike prevalence, which counts existing cases at one point, incidence focuses on new occurrences among people at risk. Epidemiologists, public health teams, and researchers use incidence to compare disease burden across regions, time periods, and populations.

How to Calculate Incidence Rate

Incidence rate = (number of new cases ÷ population at risk) × scale factor. The scale factor expresses the rate per a standard population size, such as per 1,000, 10,000, 100,000, or 1,000,000 people. For example, 12 new cases in 50,000 people equals 24 per 100,000 when scaled to that denominator.

Projecting Cases to Another Population

Once you know the incidence rate, you can estimate expected new cases in a different population by reversing the formula: expected cases = (incidence rate ÷ scale) × target population. This helps plan resources, screening programs, and outbreak response. Ensure the study population and target population share similar risk profiles and that the time period matches.
