Kinetic Impact Energy

Impact energy is the kinetic energy carried by a moving object. It quantifies how much energy is available to deform materials, break connections, or cause damage in collisions and drops.

Formula

$$E = \frac{1}{2} m v^2$$

Rearranging for velocity: \(v = \sqrt{2E/m}\). Mass \(m\) is in kilograms, velocity \(v\) in meters per second, and energy \(E\) in joules.

Practical Notes

Kinetic energy grows with the square of speed. Doubling velocity quadruples impact energy. Use consistent SI units for reliable results in engineering and safety analysis.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is impact energy?

Impact energy is kinetic energy at the moment before collision. It represents the energy that can be absorbed or dissipated during impact.

How do I find velocity from known energy?

Switch to velocity mode and enter mass and impact energy. The calculator uses v = sqrt(2E/m).

Does this include potential energy?

No. This tool covers kinetic energy only. For falling objects, combine gravitational potential energy with kinetic energy separately.

Why does velocity matter more than mass?

Energy depends on v squared but only linearly on mass. Small speed increases can produce large energy changes.

What units should I use?

Use kilograms for mass, meters per second for velocity, and joules for energy to stay in SI units.
