Fishing Reel Line Capacity Explained

This Fishing Reel Line Capacity Calculator estimates how much fishing line fits on your reel spool using spool dimensions and line diameter. The calculation is based on the cylindrical volume of the spool cavity. Pair it with our Fish Weight Calculator to estimate your catch after landing a fish.

The Line Capacity Formula

Spool capacity equals Width × (Outer Diameter² − Arbor Diameter²). Line length is then Spool Capacity / Line Diameter². For example, a spool 10 mm wide with a 50 mm outer diameter, 15 mm arbor, and 0.23 mm line holds about 200 meters of line.

Choosing Line Diameter

Thicker line occupies more spool space, reducing capacity. Monofilament, braided, and fluorocarbon lines all use the same volume formula — only the diameter changes. Check your reel label for published capacity pairs like 0.23 mm / 200 m to cross-check results.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate fishing reel line capacity?

Multiply spool width by the difference of outer and arbor diameter squares, then divide by the square of your line diameter. All measurements should use the same units (millimeters recommended).

What is spool capacity?

Spool capacity is the total volume available for line on your reel, determined by the hollow cylindrical space between the arbor and the outer rim of the spool.

Can I use a different line diameter than listed on my reel?

Yes. Enter your new line diameter and the calculator shows how much of that line fits on the same spool using the volume relationship.

Why use arbor and outer diameter instead of one spool diameter?

The arbor is the inner hub where line starts. Subtracting its area gives the actual space available for wound line, producing a more accurate capacity estimate.
