What Is EPF?

The Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) is a retirement savings scheme for salaried workers in India's organized private sector. Both employee and employer contribute monthly, and balances earn government-set interest compounded each month.

How EPF Contributions Work

Employees typically contribute 12% of basic pay plus dearness allowance. Employers also contribute 12%, but a portion (up to 8.33% of Rs 15,000) goes to the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS), with the remainder credited to the EPF account.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the current EPF interest rate?

The EPFO sets the rate annually. This calculator defaults to 8.5% but lets you adjust the rate for scenario planning.

Why is employer EPS contribution capped?

Employer pension contributions are capped at 8.33% of Rs 15,000 per month. Any excess employer share above the EPS cap is credited to EPF instead.

Can I contribute more than 12%?

Yes, through the Voluntary Provident Fund (VPF). Increase the employee contribution percentage in this calculator to model higher voluntary savings.

Is EPF maturity amount taxable?

EPF withdrawals are generally tax-free after five years of continuous service, subject to current Indian tax rules. Consult a tax advisor for your specific situation.
