What Are Dietary Reference Intakes?

Dietary Reference Intakes (DRI) provide science-based daily nutrient targets for calories, macronutrients, and selected vitamins and minerals. This calculator estimates energy needs with the Mifflin-St Jeor equation and applies Acceptable Macronutrient Distribution Ranges (AMDR). Pair results with our Calorie Calculator and TDEE Calculator for weight management planning.

Calories and Macronutrients

Total daily calories equal BMR multiplied by an activity factor. Protein, fat, and carbohydrate ranges follow age-based AMDR percentages. Fiber is estimated as 14 grams per 1,000 kcal, and water intake approximates 1 mL per kcal consumed.

Selected Micronutrient RDAs

The tool also displays common RDAs for iron, calcium, vitamin D, vitamin C, sodium, and potassium based on age and sex. Pregnancy and lactation needs differ and should be confirmed with a clinician or dietitian.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between DRI and RDA?

DRI is the overall framework; RDA is the recommended daily amount that meets the needs of most healthy people in a group.

How is daily calorie need calculated?

BMR is computed with Mifflin-St Jeor, then multiplied by your selected physical activity factor.

What protein range does AMDR recommend for adults?

For adults over 18, protein typically ranges from 10% to 30% of total daily calories.

Can this replace medical nutrition advice?

No. Use these estimates as general guidance and consult a healthcare professional for individualized plans.
