What Is the CIWA-Ar Scale?

The Clinical Institute Withdrawal Assessment for Alcohol, revised (CIWA-Ar), scores ten withdrawal symptoms to quantify alcohol withdrawal severity. It is widely used in hospitals to guide monitoring and treatment decisions. For alcohol use screening, see the AUDIT-C Calculator.

Scoring Overview

Nine symptom categories score from 0 to 7. Orientation scores from 0 to 4. The maximum total is 67 points. Higher scores generally indicate more severe withdrawal.

Interpreting the Total Score

Scores below 10 usually do not require pharmacological treatment. Scores from 10 to 20 need clinical judgment. Scores above 20 suggest severe withdrawal and urgent medical evaluation.
