What Is Cerebral Perfusion Pressure?

CPP Formula

Mean arterial pressure (MAP) can be entered directly or estimated from systolic and diastolic blood pressure.

$$\text{MAP} = \text{DBP} + \frac{\text{SBP} - \text{DBP}}{3}$$

Intracranial pressure (ICP) is measured in mmHg, often via invasive monitoring in severe head injury or intracranial hypertension.

Reference Ranges by Age

  • 0 to 5 years: CPP often targeted around 30 to 40 mmHg
  • 6 to 11 years: about 35 to 50 mmHg
  • 12 to 17 years: about 50 to 60 mmHg
  • Adults: commonly 60 to 80 mmHg

Clinical Use

Low CPP risks cerebral ischemia. Excessive CPP may reflect uncontrolled intracranial hypertension or overly aggressive blood pressure support. Targets are individualized in traumatic brain injury, stroke, and postoperative neurosurgical care.
