Car Jump Projectile Motion

A car leaving a ramp behaves like a projectile. Horizontal and vertical motion are independent. Gravity acts downward with \(g \approx 9.81\,\text{m/s}^2\). This calculator uses classical projectile equations without air drag — useful for education and rough estimates only.

Range and Flight Time

With launch speed \(v\), angle \(\theta\), and height difference \(h_0\) (launch above landing):

$$v_x = v\cos\theta, \quad v_y = v\sin\theta$$ $$t_f = \frac{v_y + \sqrt{v_y^2 + 2g(h_0 - h_f)}}{g}$$ $$R = v_x \cdot t_f$$

On level ground (\(h_0 = h_f\)), this simplifies to \(R = v^2\sin(2\theta)/g\) and \(t_f = 2v_y/g\). Maximum height is \(h_{\max} = h_0 + v_y^2/(2g)\).

Height Difference

A positive height difference means the launch point is above the landing surface, increasing range. A negative value (launch below landing) shortens the jump. Real stunt jumps also depend on ramp geometry, aerodynamics, and vehicle rotation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What angle gives maximum range on flat ground?

45° maximizes range when launch and landing are at the same height. With a height difference, the optimal angle shifts.

Does this include air resistance?

No. This model ignores drag, vehicle rotation, and ramp interaction. Real jumps are shorter than the ideal projectile result.

What units should I use for speed?

Enter take-off speed in km/h. The calculator converts to m/s internally for the physics equations.

How is maximum height calculated?

At the peak, vertical velocity is zero. Height above launch is \(v_y^2/(2g)\), plus any initial height difference.

Is car jumping safe to try?

No. This tool is for educational simulation only. Vehicle stunts require professional engineering, safety equipment, and closed courses.
