BBQ Grill Size Calculator

Estimate required grill area and meat amount from guest count, and check whether your grill is large enough.

O M T

How Much Grill Space Do You Need?

A practical rule is about 72 in² (464.5 cm²) of grill area per adult and roughly 0.5 lb of meat per guest. Enter your guest count to get a recommended grill size and meat estimate. Compare with your own grill dimensions to see if it is large enough. For full party planning, try the BBQ Calculator.

Formula

$$\text{grill area} = \text{guests} \times 72\ \text{in}^2$$

$$\text{meat} = \text{guests} \times 0.5\ \text{lb}$$

Example

Ten guests need about 720 in² of cooking area and 5 lb of meat. A 24 × 18 in grill provides 432 in², which is below the recommendation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this include vegetables and sides?

No. The meat estimate covers main protein only. Add extra grill space if you cook many sides at the same time.

Why 72 square inches per person?

It is a common catering guideline that leaves enough room to cook without crowding the grates.

Can vegetarian guests change the estimate?

Reduce the guest count or meat amount for guests who will not eat grilled meat.

What if my grill has two zones?

Use the total primary cooking area across active grates. Indirect zones help but do not replace space for the main sear zone.
