How Alcohol Dilution Works
To reach a target ABV, mix a strong spirit with water or a weaker alcohol. The cross method compares concentrations:
$$\text{weaker volume} = \frac{(A - C) \times V}{C - B}$$

Example
Dilute 1000 mL of 91% isopropyl alcohol to 70% with water (0% ABV). You need $(91 - 70) \times 1000 / 70 \approx 300$ mL of water for about 1300 mL total.
Volume Contraction
Mixed alcohol and water occupy slightly less volume than the sum of the parts. The optional contraction estimate uses common reference losses by target ABV.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I dilute with vodka instead of water?
Yes. Enter the weaker liquid ABV as B. The target ABV must lie between B and the strong ABV.
Why must strong ABV be higher than the target?
You can only reach a lower concentration by adding a weaker liquid. If strong ABV equals the target, no diluent is needed.
Does this work for proof values?
US proof is twice ABV. Convert proof to percent before using the calculator.
What units should I use?
Any volume unit works as long as strong volume and weaker volume use the same unit, such as milliliters or liters.
