XML Attributes to Elements

Promote XML attributes into child elements or demote simple text-only children back into attributes locally.

O M T

Promote XML attributes or demote simple child elements

Integration pipelines sometimes require attributes on elements, while other systems expect the same metadata as nested tags. This converter rewrites XML locally: either turn each attribute into a child element with the same name and text value, or collapse simple text-only children back into attributes on the parent element.

When to use each direction

  • Attributes to child elements: feed strict schema validators or APIs that reject attributes on certain nodes.
  • Children to attributes: shrink verbose XML when values are scalar and elements have no nested structure.

The transformation uses the browser DOMParser API. Namespace declarations (xmlns) are preserved; only regular attributes are promoted. For JSON output with explicit attribute objects, try the XML Attributes to JSON tool or the Convert XML to JSON converter for default @_ prefixes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which child elements become attributes?

Only elements that contain text and have no child elements or attributes of their own. Mixed-content nodes are left unchanged.

Is the rewrite lossless?

Order of promoted attributes may differ from the original document, and demoting children removes the nested element structure. Always review output before production use.

Does my XML leave the browser?

No. Parsing and serialization run entirely on your device.
