The Mathematical Formula for Well Volume

A standard water well is geometrically a cylinder. Therefore, the volume of water is determined by the cylinder volume formula:

$$V = \pi \cdot r^2 \cdot h$$

Where:

  • $V$ represents the standing water volume.
  • $r$ is the radius of the well casing (which is half of the diameter, $r = \frac{d}{2}$).
  • $h$ is the height of the standing water column, calculated as the total well depth ($D$) minus the depth to the water table ($W$):
$$h = D - W$$

Once the volume is calculated in cubic feet or cubic meters, it is converted to standard liquid measurements like US Gallons or Liters to provide actionable data for pumps, testing, or chemical treatment.

What is the difference between well depth and depth to water?

Total well depth is the distance from the ground surface to the bottom of the well. Depth to water (static water level) is the distance from the ground surface down to the top of the water table. The difference between these two values gives you the height of the standing water column.

Why is calculating well water volume important for purging?

In environmental groundwater testing, stagnant water in the casing does not accurately represent the surrounding aquifer. Standard sampling protocols require purging (pumping out) 3 to 5 times the volume of the standing water column before taking a sample to ensure fresh groundwater is collected.

Does well casing diameter refer to the inner or outer diameter?

For accurate volume calculations, you should always use the inner diameter (ID) of the casing, as the thickness of the casing pipe itself does not contain water.
