Compress Signatures to Exact KB Limits for Exam Portals
Government job applications, university admissions, and competitive exam forms often reject uploaded signatures because the file exceeds a strict kilobyte ceiling. A phone photo or scanner export can easily reach 100 KB or more, while portals such as SSC, IBPS, UPSC, and Railway RRB commonly require signatures between 10 KB and 20 KB in JPEG format.
This Signature Compressor uses a binary search over JPEG quality to find the highest fidelity that still fits under your target size. If quality reduction alone is not enough, the tool reduces image dimensions while preserving readable pen strokes. All processing happens in your browser, so your signature never leaves your device.
How Binary Search Compression Works
JPEG compression is not linear. Lowering quality from 80% to 70% might save 1 KB on one image and 12 KB on another. Instead of guessing, the tool tests multiple quality levels and narrows the range until it finds the best result under your limit.
The algorithm also applies a small safety margin (about 3%) below your entered target. Portals sometimes calculate file size differently, so aiming slightly under the published limit helps avoid rejection messages like "signature size must not exceed 20 KB."
Common Signature Size Requirements
- 10 KB: Minimum signature limits on some banking and state recruitment forms.
- 20 KB: The most common ceiling for SSC, IBPS, SBI, and RRB signature uploads.
- 30 KB to 50 KB: Used when portals allow a wider range or when signatures are uploaded together with other documents.
Before compressing, crop your signature tightly on white paper using the Crop Image tool. If the portal also specifies pixel dimensions, resize first with the Image Resizer, then compress here. For general photo uploads that are not signatures, try the Image Compressor.
Best Practices for Exam Signature Uploads
- Sign on plain white paper with a dark pen for maximum contrast.
- Scan or photograph the signature straight-on with even lighting.
- Compress from the original file, not a copy already sent through chat apps.
- Zoom to 100% on the downloaded JPEG and confirm strokes remain clear.
- Save the output as JPEG; most Indian exam portals do not accept PNG signatures.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this tool guarantee an exact file size?
The tool aims safely under your target KB so strict portal validators accept the upload. It uses binary search to maximize quality while staying below the limit. If the original image is extremely large, dimensions may be reduced slightly to reach very small targets such as 10 KB or 20 KB.
Which target size should I use for SSC or IBPS signatures?
Most SSC and IBPS notifications list a 10 KB to 20 KB range for signatures. Choose the 20 KB preset unless your notification specifies a lower maximum. If the portal mentions a range, pick the upper number as your target.
Can I upload PNG or HEIC signature files?
Yes. The tool accepts common image formats including JPG, PNG, WebP, and HEIC. The compressed download is always JPEG because that is the format required by nearly all government exam portals.
Is my signature uploaded to a server?
No. Compression runs entirely in your browser using the HTML Canvas API. Your signature image is processed in local memory and is never transmitted to our servers.
Why does the compressed file look softer than the original?
JPEG is a lossy format. At very small targets such as 20 KB, some fine detail is removed to meet the size limit. Starting with a tightly cropped, high-contrast signature on a white background gives the best result at low file sizes.
What if my portal says the file is still too large?
Try a target 2 KB below the published limit. For example, use 18 KB when the form says 20 KB. Also confirm you are uploading the downloaded JPEG file and not a screenshot or re-exported copy that increased the size.
