Op Amp Gain Calculator

Calculate operational amplifier voltage gain for inverting and non-inverting circuits from input and feedback resistor values.

Operational Amplifier Voltage Gain

An op-amp amplifies the voltage difference between its inputs. With external feedback resistors, you can set a predictable closed-loop gain for inverting or non-inverting amplifier circuits.

Gain Formulas

For an inverting amplifier:

$$A_{inv} = -\frac{R_f}{R_{in}}$$

For a non-inverting amplifier:

$$A_{non-inv} = 1 + \frac{R_f}{R_{in}}$$

The negative sign on the inverting gain means the output is 180° out of phase with the input. Both formulas assume ideal op-amp behavior with negative feedback.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the gain of an inverting op-amp with 1 kΩ and 10 kΩ resistors?

The magnitude is 10, written as -10 because the output is inverted.

Why is non-inverting gain always at least 1?

The formula starts with 1 and adds the resistor ratio, so unity gain is the minimum closed-loop value.

Which resistor is Rin?

Rin is the input resistor connected to the signal path. Rf is the feedback resistor from output back to the inverting input.

Do these formulas include load effects?

No. They assume an ideal op-amp with negative feedback and ignore real-world bandwidth and output swing limits.
