Number Formatter
Format any number with locale aware thousands separators, currency symbols, fixed decimals, scientific notation, binary, hexadecimal, and written words, then copy the format you need.
What Is a Number Formatter?
A number formatter rewrites a numeric value into the presentation styles people and programs actually read. The same quantity, for example 48261.375, can be shown as 48,261.375 in the United States, 48.261,375 in Germany, $48,261.38 as currency, 48.3K in compact form, 4.826E4 in scientific notation, 1011110001110101.011 in binary, or as the phrase forty-eight thousand two hundred sixty-one point three seven five. This tool produces all of those at once so you can copy exactly the variant you need.
Number Grouping and Decimal Separators
Most cultures group long numbers in threes to make them easier to scan, but the separator characters differ. English speaking locales use a comma for groups and a period for decimals (1,234,567.89), while most of Europe, South America, and many other regions swap them (1.234.567,89). Some locales use thin spaces or Arabic decimal separators instead. The locale selector in this formatter follows the Unicode CLDR conventions through the browser's built in Intl.NumberFormat API, so the output matches what a native reader of that locale expects.
The Formats Produced
- Standard: grouped with the locale's own separators, the default human readable form.
- Plain: the same digits with no grouping separators, useful for identifiers, CSV exports, and numeric fields that must not contain commas.
- Currency (USD): a dollar sign, two decimal places, and locale aware grouping, for prices and invoices.
- Accounting (USD): the same as currency but negative values appear in parentheses, the convention used in financial statements.
- Compact: short forms such as
12.3K,4.5M, and2.1B, ideal for dashboards and chart labels where space is tight. - Scientific: normalized mantissa and exponent notation like
4.826E4, standard in engineering and the physical sciences. - Binary, octal, and hexadecimal: base 2, 8, and 16 representations. Fractional parts are converted digit by digit, so decimals convert too, not just whole numbers.
- Words (English): the full written out name of the number, including scales such as thousand, million, billion, and beyond, plus a digit by digit reading of any decimal part.
How to Use the Number Formatter
- Type or paste a number into the Number field. Signs, grouping commas, spaces, underscores, scientific notation like
2.5e6, and decimals are all accepted. - Pick a Number Locale to control the grouping and decimal separators used in the output.
- Choose a fixed number of Decimal Places or leave it on Auto to keep the digits you entered.
- Read the highlighted result card for the standard grouped value, then copy any row from the Every Format list with its copy button.
Large Numbers and Precision
Integers longer than fifteen digits exceed the precise range of JavaScript's floating point numbers, so this formatter switches to BigInt arithmetic for them. That means a 30 digit integer still gets correctly grouped, converted to binary and hexadecimal, and written out in words with every digit intact. Very large values written in scientific notation are expanded to their full digit form first whenever the browser can represent them exactly.
Practical Uses
Developers use the plain format when generating JSON, SQL, or configuration values that must not contain grouping characters. Report writers use currency and accounting formats for financial tables. Localization testers compare how the same value renders across locales before shipping an app. Students and teachers use the words format to check how large numbers are read aloud, and the base conversions pair naturally with the Integer Base Converter when working with memory addresses, color codes, and bit masks.
Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the formatter round my number?
Only when you ask it to. With decimal places set to Auto the exact digits you entered are preserved. Choosing 0, 2, 4, or 6 decimals applies standard rounding at that position for every format at once.
Why do German and French outputs look different from English ones?
Those locales use a period or a space for thousands grouping and a comma for the decimal mark. The formatter produces the culturally correct rendering instead of forcing English conventions, which is exactly what you want when localizing an interface or document.
Can I format a number bigger than one trillion?
Yes. The words output supports scales up to novemdecillion (10 to the 60th power), and grouped, currency, binary, octal, and hexadecimal outputs use BigInt so they stay exact for very long integers.
How are fractional binary and hexadecimal values produced?
The fractional digits are converted with repeated multiplication by the base, the same long hand method taught in computer science courses. The formatter shows up to 24 fractional digits and stops early once the remainder reaches zero.
Is my data sent anywhere?
No. All parsing and formatting runs in your browser with built in JavaScript APIs. Nothing is uploaded, stored, or logged, and the page keeps working offline once loaded.
What is the difference between currency and accounting format?
Both show the same value and symbol. Currency renders negatives with a leading minus sign, while accounting renders them in parentheses, which is the standard presentation in balance sheets and ledgers.
