Grams to Calories Calculator
Convert grams of carbohydrates, protein, fat, and alcohol into calories with per-macronutrient breakdown and total energy calculation.
What Is the Grams to Calories Calculator?
The Grams to Calories Calculator converts macronutrient grams into calories. Food labels list carbs, protein, and fat in grams, but many people track daily energy in kilocalories (kcal). This tool multiplies each macronutrient by its standard calorie factor and shows a full breakdown plus optional alcohol calories.
Results update in real time as you type. Use it to decode nutrition labels, plan meals, or verify the calorie content of homemade recipes.
How to Use This Calculator
- Enter carbs: Type carbohydrate grams from a label or meal plan.
- Enter protein: Add protein grams.
- Enter fat: Add fat grams.
- Optional alcohol: Enter drink volume in mL and ABV percent.
- Read totals: See calories from each macronutrient and the combined total.
Calories per Gram
| Macronutrient | Energy per Gram |
|---|---|
| Carbohydrates | $4\ kcal/g$ |
| Protein | $4\ kcal/g$ |
| Fat | $9\ kcal/g$ |
| Alcohol | $7\ kcal/g$ |
Conversion Formulas
Total calories from macronutrients:
$$E_{total} = (g_{carbs} \times 4) + (g_{protein} \times 4) + (g_{fat} \times 9) + (g_{alcohol} \times 7)$$
Example Calculation
Suppose a food item has $23\ g$ carbs, $4\ g$ protein, and $9\ g$ fat:
- Carbs: $23 \times 4 = 92\ kcal$
- Protein: $4 \times 4 = 16\ kcal$
- Fat: $9 \times 9 = 81\ kcal$
- Total: $92 + 16 + 81 = 189\ kcal$
Alcohol Calories
Alcohol grams are estimated from drink volume and ABV:
$$g_{alcohol} = V_{mL} \times \frac{ABV}{100} \times 0.78924$$
Then multiply alcohol grams by $7\ kcal/g$. For example, $50\ mL$ of $40\%$ vodka contains about $15.8\ g$ alcohol and about $110\ kcal$ from alcohol alone.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many calories are in 1 gram of carbs?
Carbohydrates provide about $4$ kilocalories per gram. Food labels and nutrition databases usually round to $4\ kcal/g$ for simplicity.
How many calories are in 1 gram of fat?
Fat provides $9$ kilocalories per gram, making it the most energy-dense macronutrient.
Are calories and kilocalories the same on food labels?
On nutrition labels, the word calorie usually means kilocalorie (kcal). So 200 calories on a label means $200\ kcal$ of energy.
How do I calculate calories from alcohol?
First find alcohol mass in grams using volume, ABV, and density $0.78924\ g/mL$. Then multiply alcohol grams by $7\ kcal/g$. This calculator does both steps automatically.
How many calories are in 30 g of protein?
Thirty grams of protein provides about $120\ kcal$ ($30 \times 4 = 120$). Protein and carbohydrates both supply $4\ kcal$ per gram in standard nutrition calculations.
Why does protein also have 4 kcal per gram?
Protein and carbohydrates both provide about $4\ kcal$ per gram in standard nutrition calculations, even though their roles in the body are very different.
