Generator Power Output

Generator output power depends on voltage, current, power factor, and efficiency. AC generators require a power factor (PF) because voltage and current may not be in phase. DC generators use PF = 1.

Generator Power Formula

P = V × I × PF × η

\(P\) is real output power (watts), \(V\) is voltage, \(I\) is current, PF is power factor (0–1), and η is efficiency as a decimal. Apparent power is \(S = V \times I\) (volt-amperes).

Example: 230 V, 10 A, PF 0.85, and 90% efficiency give \(P = 230 \times 10 \times 0.85 \times 0.9 = 1768.5\) W.

What is power factor?

Power factor is the ratio of real power to apparent power (cos φ). A PF of 1 means voltage and current are in phase. Inductive loads like motors reduce PF below 1.

Why is efficiency included?

Generators convert mechanical input to electrical output with losses. Efficiency accounts for heat, friction, and core losses. Enter efficiency as a percentage (e.g., 90%).

How is DC different from AC?

DC systems have no phase angle, so power factor is always 1. The formula simplifies to P = V × I × η.

What is apparent power?

Apparent power S = V × I is measured in volt-amperes (VA). Real power P = S × PF is measured in watts. This tool shows both values.

Can I size a generator from load power?
