CV Flow Calculator

Calculate liquid flow rate in GPM from valve Cv coefficient, pressure drop, and specific gravity.

What Is the Cv Flow Coefficient?

Cv is the flow coefficient of a valve — the gallons per minute (GPM) of water at 60°F that flows through a fully open valve with a 1 psi pressure drop. It sizes control valves for liquid service.

Cv Flow Formula

$$Q = C_v \sqrt{\frac{\Delta P}{SG}}$$

\(Q\) is volumetric flow in GPM, \(\Delta P\) is pressure drop in psi, and \(SG\) is specific gravity relative to water. For water at room temperature, \(SG = 1\).

Example: Cv = 10 with 100 psi drop and SG = 1 gives \(Q = 10 \times \sqrt{100} = 100\) GPM.

Applications

Cv sizing is used in process control, HVAC hydraulics, chemical plant valve selection, and piping design where pressure drop and flow rate must be matched to valve capacity.

Frequently Asked Questions

What units does this calculator use?

US customary units: flow in GPM, pressure drop in psi, and dimensionless specific gravity.

What is specific gravity?

Specific gravity is fluid density divided by water density. Water is 1.0; heavier liquids like glycol solutions have SG greater than 1.

Does Cv apply to gases?

This formula is for liquids. Gas valves use different equations involving temperature and compressibility.

How does pressure drop affect flow?

Flow scales with the square root of pressure drop. Quadrupling ΔP doubles flow rate for a fixed Cv.

What if my valve is not fully open?

Cv ratings assume full stroke. Partially open valves have reduced effective Cv; consult manufacturer curves.
